Courthouse Police Service Officer

The Courthouse Service Officer is a non-commissioned position of the Sedgwick County Courthouse Police. He/she provides safety and security services for the courts, employees, and citizens who occupy or use the Courthouse, Juvenile Courthouse, or any other County facilities as well as provide security for the property of Sedgwick County. Methods used include the use of magnetometers, x-ray machines, hand scanning, physical pat-downs, foot and vehicle patrols. He/she detains persons wanted by warrant or commitment.

Provides safety and security functions to preserve the public peace and insures that dangerous items are kept out of the Courthouses.

  • Provide lobby screening to ensure unauthorized people, weapons and other dangerous/illegal objects/substances do not enter the building.
  • Check employee badges, LEO credentials and Fast Passes to insure they are current and valid; either in the Lobby or the Control Center.
  • While working the tray position and he/she will monitor entry through the metal detectors. He/she will be sensitive and alert to medical conditions which would necessitate a person circumventing the scanning equipment. He/she will notify the officer in the Hand Scanning Position and then send that person around the scanning equipment to them.
  • While working the hand scan position and he/she will ask the person who alarms to recheck their pockets, hand scan the person completely, checking ankles by hand, and check all points that sound the hand scanner.
  • While working the X-ray position he/she will visually check the image of all purses, bags, coats, brief cases, and packages. Ensure that property is picked up by the person who placed it on the belt.
  • While working in the Control Center and he/she will assist the commissioned officer with answering the telephone, monitoring alarm panels, monitoring CCTV’s, checking employee badges, LEO credentials, logging in delivery personnel, screening unauthorized people, checking for unauthorized weapons and dangerous/illegal objects/substances as to not to allow them to enter the building.

Provide safety and security functions to preserve the public peace, by conducting roving patrols to deter illegal activities and confrontations, by a visual uniformed presence, and provide assistance to citizens.

  • Provide a thorough check of the entire Courthouse complex by exterior and interior patrols.
  • Respond quickly to alarms, calls for assistance, and notifying the Control Center or supervisor they are in route to the call.
  • When warranted he/she will detain suspect(s) and request a commissioned police officer to conduct arrest(s) as required.

Provides safety and security services for the Courthouses, the District courts, and other county facilities as needed.

  • Standby to protect a Judge, Jury, and courtroom occupants from possible harm.
  • Detain and arrest on commitment orders by a Judge or Hearing officer, or when notified of the existence of a warrant, then request commissioned officer for assistance in booking the subject.
  • Safely operate assigned equipment and provide for proper use and maintenance of their equipment. Officers will keep their work area clean and orderly and use their time efficiently used for assigned tasks.

Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent. Six months minimum experience in a related field

Preferred Qualifications: 2-3 years in a military, law enforcement, fire, or security related field. Stable job history. Training and certificates on related topics.
