Education Specialist, Elementary Education

Researches, creates, and presents educational programs on and off-site that highlight the Zoo’s mission. Leads students and adults in presentations and hands-on activities including homeschool and drop-off programs using positive engagement skills. Remains familiar with current education standards and trends. Updates flyers and other materials to promote the Zoo and its programs. Coordinates Summer School classroom programs and educational special events. Consults on program development. Implements programs in other age groups as needed. Professional utilization of artifacts and animals.


Program Development

  • Creates elementary education programs that align with State curricular standards and current educational trends
  • Ensures that all elementary classes follow current educational trends and complement the Zoo’s mission
  • Works with community resources to bring in guest presenters and organizes rotation of all audiences during educational special events
  • Collaborates with instructional staff, other personnel, and a variety of community resources for the purpose of improving the overall quality of programs and achieving the Zoo’s mission
  • Communicates lesson plans and expectation of programs to instructional staff as needed
  • Budgets and purchases supplies necessary for programs


Program Facilitation

  • Facilitation of on and off-site programs primarily to elementary audiences but to other audiences as needed
  • Facilitation of summer school programs including preparing rosters, name buttons, instructional staff documentation, and bio fact lists
  • Collaborates with other personnel to ensure that all educational activities are prepared for educational special events
  • Leads students and adults in presentations and hands-on activities using positive engagement skills
  • Demonstrates ability to speak to a variety of ages, learning levels and abilities at the same time while holding interest and engaging audience
  • Constantly adjusting techniques and methods as needed to be most effective
  • Prepares supplies and technology necessary to facilitate programs


Animal Care and Handling

  • Demonstrates and maintains basic knowledge of animal natural history and current AZA terminology
  • Interprets animal behavior, recognizes abnormalities, and potential medical conditions
  • Effective and timely communication of any concerns to Interpretive Manager or Curator
  • Ability to follow all animal handling and transport policies
  • Exhibits skills needed to clean and maintain animals and their habitats
  • Animal handling that meets AZA Standards in front of diverse audiences


Minimum Qualifications: Two years coursework from an accredited college or university. Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Ability to obtain a valid State of Kansas Driver’s License


Preferred Qualifications: Degree in Zoology, Biology, Education, or Recreation Management from an accredited college or university. One year experience in an AZA Facility Education Program.
