The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Specialist helps facilitate a positive employee experience by acting as a resource for employees and supervisors regarding the Family Medical Leave Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, and Pregnant Workers Fairness Act. This position is responsible for administering the FML and reasonable accommodation procedures for all Sedgwick County employees, ensuring the County’s compliance with the FMLA/ADA/PWFA. This position also serves as the Sedgwick County ADA Coordinator and Liaison.

 

Administer Family Medical Leave according to federal law and county policy.

  • Act as an informed resource, providing advice and consultation, for employees and supervisors in all aspects of FML.
  • Provide FMLA training and education to supervisors and employees to ensure compliance with FML law and policy.
  • Supervise FMLA Assistant to ensure completion of certification requests, processing of designation notes and return to work certificates.
  • Oversee administration of complex cases, providing guidance to the employee or department to ensure compliance with FMLA law and policy.
  • Administer Paid Parental Leave and Leave Donation programs.

 

Coordinate and facilitate the County’s ADA compliance program and accommodations under the PWFA

  • Serve as the Sedgwick County ADA Coordinator.
  • Provide information to the public regarding ADA requirements and facility accessibility.
  • Provide advice and consultation to employees and department management relating to ADA regulations, policy, and procedure.
  • Direct and guide the employee accommodations process, facilitating interactive dialogue and accommodation discussions between employees and supervisors.
  • Facilitate candidate requests for accommodation with hiring department.
  • Provide FMLA training and education to supervisors and employees to ensure compliance with FML law and policy.
  • Investigate and respond to external ADA Grievance Requests.
  • Facilitate Requests for accommodation under the Pregnant Worker Fairness Act

 

Compliance

  • Review/research changes to legal requirements, incorporating regulatory changes and address compliance-related issues affecting FML and ADA.
  • Drive process improvement and implement best practices through research and training.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Six years of experience working in Human Resources. Up to four years of experience may be substituted with education that provides applicable knowledge and skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Two years of experience in administering FML and ADA programs in a business or government setting. One year of supervisory experience. Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Human Resources, Public or Business Administration, or a related field. Professional in Human Resources certification (PHR), Society for Human Resource Management certification (SHRM), ADA certification, or similar advanced training.
