Performs technical work related to construction and maintenance of zoo interpretive displays, exhibit features, and signage. Fabricates, maintains, and repairs in coordination with design team. Prepares, sets up and tears down special events. Participates in all the above as a departmental team member and as requested by customer.

 

Design, Construct, and Maintain

  • Constructs, installs, and maintains interpretive and thematic displays, exhibit feature, signage, and guest amenities
  • Demonstrates and develops knowledge and methods for tools and equipment utilized
  • Demonstrates and develops skills to work proficiently with traditional and innovative designs and materials, such as fine carpentry, decorative welding, concrete, rock, various metal construction, paint and other surface finishes, audio/video systems, lighting, low-tech mechanics, and electronic special effects and interactives
  • Interprets and follows design requirements. Contributes construction and material solutions
  • Procures and maintains materials, equipment, and data files in an approved orderly fashion
  • Maintains knowledge of occupational hazards of trades
  • Performs routine and preventative maintenance of all installations
  • Communicates and collaborates with co-workers

 

Inspect, Evaluate, Troubleshoot and Repair

  • Performs inspections of graphic and exhibit installations and equipment
  • Determines issues and conducts repairs
  • Delivers solutions that are cost & time effective
  • Utilizes the work request system

 

Event Setup and Interdepartmental Support

  • Performs setup of special events; including but not limited to providing for electrical, setup of lighting, signs, tents, props, and other structures
  • Designs and constructs various props/sets for special events
  • Assists departments when needed

 

Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent. Experience in maintenance and/or construction or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. This is a driving level position that requires a valid Kansas driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance.

 

Preferred Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent. Two to four years’ experience in maintenance or construction. Certifications from a technical college in construction related fields.
