Performs firefighting work in the protection of life and property by combating, extinguishing fires under emergency conditions which involves personal hazard. Recognizes, maintains, and ability to utilize firefighting and medical tools/equipment/apparatus in a safe/effective/efficient manner. Studies emergency response methods/techniques and performs routine work in the maintenance of firefighting equipment, apparatus and quarters. Implements EMT level medical care to patients. Involved in mitigating other emergency incidents such as Hazardous Material, Rescue, and Natural Disasters. Participates in community events, fire prevention activities, public education activities, fire report completion, cleaning of stations, and other daily demands. 

 

Responsible for Checking Emergency Response Apparatus, Equipment on Apparatus, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), while Exhibiting a Teamwork Attitude.

  • Performs a wide variety of cleaning, maintenance and testing functions of fire apparatus and equipment such as checking fluid levels, pressures and operations of horns and sirens, etc.; ensures vehicles and equipment are maintained in compliance with standard operating procedures and department regulations; informs supervisor of mechanical repairs and maintenance work needed.
  • Checks PPE and self-contained breathing apparatus, resuscitation equipment and other equipment; cleans fire trucks, washes and cleans fire house.

 

Responds to Emergency Events with Life Safety, Incident Stability, and Property Conservation being the priorities. 

  • Operates fire apparatus; connects and lays hose lines from a water source and figures friction loss and nozzle pressure; aims hose to spray water to confine and extinguish the fire seat; performs search and rescue operations to remove people that are trapped by fire; ventilates structure to get smoke and fire gases out of structure; performs salvage and overhaul operations.
  • Provides basic life support and EMT level medical treatment; recognizes the patients illness or injury by interpreting symptoms; splints injuries, performs CPR, treats burns, ventilates non breathing patients, documents and maintains accurate records of all medical treatment provided.
  • Performs activities after fire is controlled; prevents rekindle; ensures that walls or structures are not in danger of falling; secures building; guides occupants to agencies providing disaster assistance.

 

Personal Development of Cognitive and Physical Motor Skills to Enhance Job Performance.

  • Studies key roadways in Sedgwick County (mile lines) and maintains working knowledge of their area; streets, hydrant locations and key buildings (target hazards).
  • Under the direction of a supervisor, inspects buildings in assigned area for the purpose of noting occupancy, existence of fire hazards and adequacy and location of exits, fire escapes and private fire equipment.
  • Attends training sessions and demonstrations of firefighting methods, equipment operations, street hydrants and other water supply locations.

 

Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent. State of Kansas EMT (will accept National Registry but must be able to transfer to Kansas certification). Per Sedgwick County Policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance. Must have or obtain valid US driver’s license non-commercial Class B, or higher within first three months of employment. CPAT Certification (completed within the previous 12 months of hiring). Preferred Qualifications: Currently employed for at least one year as a fire fighter in a career fire department. Associate’s in Fire Science. State of Kansas AEMT certification (will accept National Registry but must be able to transfer to Kansas certification).
