Supervises land surveying and construction inspection operations; manages all active construction projects; implements the annual preventive maintenance program.


Manage all on-going surveying and active construction projects for Public Works.

  • Oversee construction contracts; confer with contractors and vendors concerning plans, specifications, and the quality of work performed
  • Review contractor’s drawings and approve all pay estimates.
  • Coordinate final relocation of utilities for construction.
  • Administer all construction modifications.
  • Inspect active construction sites for compliance with the project Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan.
  • Approve contractor pay estimates and ensure progress is commensurate with recommended payments.
  • Review technical reports, engineering drawings, and construction plans for compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, KDOT, and Sedgwick County design specifications.
  • Recommend methods of resolving unusual and complex problems and improving materials and practices; interpret applicable engineering and administrative directives, policies, and standards.
  • Meet with interdepartmental staff, outside engineers, township officials, and citizens to solve engineering and design issues, and to coordinate the use of survey and inspection personnel.
  • Employ Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, specialized modeling software and CAD design software in preparation of data compilation, engineering design and analysis.


Assist in the development of the annual preventive maintenance program.

  • Coordinate the development of engineering plans and project specifications, and prepare cost estimates.
  • Implement the annual preventive maintenance program.
  • Coordinate with civil engineers, consultants, contractors, and the public to ensure projects progress as scheduled.


Supervise a staff of engineering personnel in field surveying and project inspection

  • Plan and assign work for engineering personnel.
  • Provide feedback to employees by evaluating job performance
  • Guide development of knowledge, skills, and abilities to improve performance.


Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent. Ten years’ progressive experience in highway or bridge construction or construction inspection, five years of this experience as a construction supervisor. Certification from KDOT’s Certified Inspector Training Program in Basic Inspection (BI), Asphalt Paving Inspection (API), and ACI Concrete Field Technician (CF). Per Sedgwick County Policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid Kansas driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance.


Preferred Qualifications: Graduation from a college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a closely related field of study. Eight years of progressive civil engineering experience in highway or bridge design and construction. Two years of AutoCAD experience. Registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Kansas.
