Director of Animal Care, Education, Security & Safety - ZOO

The purpose is to provide leadership, vision and support for the Zoo and its core zoological and educational activities.  Oversees Zoological Programs and Education, as well as special project work under the direction as well as special project work Plans and directs short and long-range strategies and plans for animal care and management, education departments.

  • Oversees the Zoological Programs Departments including Animal Care, Animal Health, Animal Welfare/Behavior Husbandry and the management of the Zoo’s resident animal population including: animal population plans, enrichment and operant condition training programs, acquisition, disposition, conservation and breeding programs, welfare, husbandry, veterinary and record-keeping.
  • Oversees the Zoo’s Education Department. Provide management and support for the Zoo’s conservation education programs, including but not limited to, outreach, Zoo camps, interpreters, the Zoo pre-school and all other educational programs.
  • Creates performance excellence by capacity building of staff, identifying best practices, building measurement systems, analyzing data and improving operational efficiency and profitability. Translates Zoo goals into operational practices and holds team members accountable
  • Ensures policies for animal acquisition/disposition and research based projects are within Zoo and AZA policies and within local, state, federal and international laws and regulations
  • Oversees the Zoo’s Security & Safety Department. Provides management and support for the safety and security programs, including overall ensuring of a safe environment for all team members and guests and ensures the safety programs meet the current AZA Accreditation Standards.
  • Plans, implements and participates in dangerous animal incident procedures and drills. Responsible for making quick decisions that may be a matter of life-and-death for visitors or staff. Serves as a member of the Sedgwick County Zoo’s Strategic Operations Team, The Strategic Operations Team develops and directs the strategic vision of the organization and helps coordinate the daily operations of the Zoo
  • Participates in the planning and design of new exhibits and facilities or renovations of existing exhibits and facilities; reviews blueprints; recommends maintenance work or capital improvements based on general inspection of grounds and exhibits with appropriate personnel.
  • Develops various budget recommendations; controls assigned budget lines and authorizes expenditures; monitors grant budgets and grantee expenditures; assures timely and accurate reporting on funding.
  • Makes organizational decisions and/or solve conflicts.
  • With the Strategic Operations Team, help manage the Zoo’s Strategic/Master Plan, including new conservation/animal collection/education projects/programs.


Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Biology/Zoology/Animal Science, Business Administration, Finance, Non-Profit Management or related field. Five (5) years of full-time experience in a zoological park, wildlife setting or other non-profit, mission-driven organization.  Prior experience in a managerial role is required. Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance. Out-of-state driver’s license accepted upon hire with the ability to obtain a valid State of Kansas Driver’s License within 30 days of employment.


Preferred Qualifications: An advanced degree in Biology/Zoology/Animal Science, Business Administration, Finance, Non-Profit Management or related field. Seven (7) or more years of demonstrated effective leadership in a comparable environment of an AZA licensed facility.
