Performs advanced administrative functions as a liaison in the receipt of discovery materials from various law enforcement agencies and copying and distributing them to criminal defense attorneys. Provides assistance in carrying out special projects. Makes independent decisions and interprets departmental policy in assignments that may not follow prescribed routine.
Process and Prepare Discovery (initial, supplemental, PV’s)
- Maintain DA Discovery email inbox, and receive discovery requests from defense counsel
- Receive discovery “dumps” from law enforcement
- Scan in documents and add files from discs
- Request, assign and maintain body cam and other evidence on Evidence.com
- Review documents and media to determine what is disseminated and what is not and check with assigned attorney regarding documents or media that may not be sent in discovery
- After reviewing, complete all necessary steps to provide discovery to defense within 5 day period, including documents, media, and body cam videos
- Process special cases such as Bates Stamped and Pro Se cases
- Work with attorneys, legal assistants, defense counsel, and other staff to resolve discovery issues
- Notify defense counsel when discovery is ready for pickup and obtain signed receipt upon delivery
- Create copies of law enforcement evidence for use by attorneys and the DA Office
Maintain Discovery Spreadsheet, Statistics, and Data and Reference Manual
- Log new cases as they come in
- Add requests and supplemental discovery to the Discovery Spreadsheet
- Maintain supplemental log as items come in
- Monitor spreadsheet to ensure all discovery is sent out within the period designated per office protocol and Kansas statutes
- Ensure all discovery policies in manual are approved by supervisor
- Transcribe all discovery policies and processes into an easily understood format via the reference manual
- Monitor policies to keep updated as processes change
Other Duties
- Complete afternoon Public Defender list as needed
- Download 911 Calls and process
- Communicate with law enforcement regarding acquiring new copies of corrupted files
- Communicate with attorneys regarding any questions they may have about discovery
- Process Bates Numbered cases
Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent supplemented by courses or training in advanced technology techniques. Four (4) years’ experience employed in criminal justice agencies or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, abilities and competencies
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice related field or technology preferred. Bilingual in Spanish.
