The Epidemiology Supervisor leads the Epidemiology team that prevents disease and protects the public from health threats under state statute. The position supervises a team, evaluating work and preparing team performance and activity reports. The Supervisor plans and implements studies to prevent or control diseases, injuries and conditions; performs advanced statistical data analyses and prepares reports; collaborates with community partners; and conducts disease investigations. The employee in this position regularly interacts with individuals processing news of personally contracting and spreading diseases and can be emotionally charged or hostile. The employee may deploy to the field as a responder or in a leadership position during public health emergencies.
Supervise and develop employees
- Supervise and evaluate performance of Epidemiology staff and provide regular supervision/coaching
- Audit and review staff work, providing guidance to ensure expectations and SCHD standards and state guidelines and regulations are met
- Hire and ensure staff are adequately trained and follow the standards set by SCHD, County, and other agencies
- Write and ensure procedures and policies are in place and followed for safety and efficient operation
- Manage contracts and grants
Monitor, analyze, and report on disease data to improve the health of the community
- Plan and ensure implementation of studies to monitor, prevent, or control diseases, injuries, or conditions
- Utilize advanced statistical techniques to manage, analyze, and summarize disease investigation and surveillance data
- Consult with public, private, and nonprofit health and health-related state and local agencies and organizations, providing technical assistance based on current research and regulations to improve disease reporting and prevent disease spread
- Work with other department and county partners to develop program materials and health messages for medical professionals, community partners and the public
Ensure disease investigations are conducted per established state and local guidelines
- Ensure all staff perform accurate and complete notifiable disease investigations, including accurate documentation of disease investigation work
- Lead outbreak investigations, including driving for on-site review of facilities and procedures
- Perform timely investigations of individual disease reports. This includes making phone calls and visiting homes and businesses.
- Coordinate and perform inspections of properties of health concern and document findings
Minimum Qualifications: Master’s Degree in public health or a biological, medical or health science including nine credit hours in epidemiological methods or in a related field. Two years of experience as an epidemiologist or similar position in a public health department or healthcare setting, including one year of experience with reportable disease investigations and one year of experience with SAS, SPSS, or other database/statistical software. One year of training or experience with disease transmission, prevention and control. One year of work experience with data management and/or data analysis. Six months of supervisory-related work experience such as evaluating work performance or performing audits. Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance. Must complete Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) IS 100, 200, and 700 courses within 30 days of employment
Preferred Qualifications: Two years of supervisory work experience. One year of work experience in the planning and coordination of epidemiological studies. Master of Public Health degree with a concentration in Epidemiology
