Performs firefighting work in the protection of life and property by combating, extinguishing fires under emergency conditions which involves personal hazard. Recognizes, maintains, and ability to utilize firefighting and medical tools/equipment/apparatus in a safe/effective/efficient manner. Studies emergency response methods/techniques and performs routine work in the maintenance of firefighting equipment, apparatus and quarters.   Implements EMT level medical care to patients, unaccompanied or under the guidance of an Officer. Involved in mitigating other emergency incidents such as Hazardous Material, Rescue and Natural Disasters. A Firefighter will contribute in community events, fire prevention activities, public education activities, fire report completion, cleaning of stations, and other daily demands.

 

Responsibility for Checking Emergency Response Apparatus, Equipment on Apparatus, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), while Exhibiting a Teamwork Attitude.

  • Performs a wide variety of cleaning, maintenance and testing functions of fire apparatus and equipment such as checking fluid levels, pressures and operations of horns and sirens.

 

Responds to Emergency Events with Life Safety, Incident Stability, and Property Conservation being the priorities.

  • Fights fires to protect property and save lives; drives at high speeds and safely to arrive at scenes in a safe manner. operates fire apparatus; connects and lays hose lines from a water source and figures friction loss and nozzle pressure; aims hose to spray water to confine and extinguish the fire seat; performs search and rescue operations to remove people that are trapped by fire; ventilates structure to get smoke and fire gases out of structure; performs salvage and overhaul operations.
  • May perform Hazardous Material mitigation, Rescue and protection activities; identifies hazardous materials such as acid, flammable liquids, radioactive materials, poison, bacteria, etc.; determines and implements method of protection, containment, evacuation and decontamination; maintains vehicles, equipment and supply inventory; records all equipment used at a scene; ensures compliance with OSHA, EPA and Fire Protection Agency regulations and standards and provides training on same.

 

Continues to Enhance Personal Knowledge, both Cognitive and Psych-Motor Skills, while Still Performing Daily Requirements at the Fire Station and other Locations.

  • Performs a wide variety of cleaning, maintenance and testing functions of fire apparatus and equipment such as checking fluid levels, pressures and operations of horns and sirens, etc.; ensures vehicles and equipment are maintained in compliance with standard operating procedures and department regulations; informs supervisor of mechanical repairs and maintenance work needed.
  • Studies various subjects to enhance awareness and knowledge of firefighting methods and techniques including fire suppression, rescue and vehicle extrication, hydraulics, fire science, chemistry and hazardous materials, building construction, fire ground strategy and tactics, firefighter safety and incident command.

 

Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED. State of Kansas EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic (will accept National Registry but must be able to transfer to Kansas). Valid non-commercial (Class B) driver license, CPAT Certification, and Fire Team Testing.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Associates in Fire Science.
