Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with Saturday rotation 

 

 

Provides assistance to forensic pathologists during autopsies.  Responsible for tracking and processing all evidentiary material collected at autopsy, receiving and releasing bodies and property, maintaining statistical database and general housekeeping upkeep of pathology division.  The position is also responsible for medical photography as required by the pathologist.

 

Assist pathologist during autopsy

  • Performing evisceration with case specific variances
  • Ensure proper collection of specimens for subsequent analyses and/or examination
  • Collect postmortem fingerprints
  • Prepare, process and distribute histology specimens from autopsies. Maintain histology log and computer database
  • Maintain chain of custody on postmortem specimens, personal property, and all evidence collected at autopsy
  • Collect, prepare and process DNA samples from autopsies. Maintain DNA sample computer database
  • Perform and maintain appropriate documentation associated with autopsy

 

Perform postmortem radiographs and photographs at the request of pathologist

  • Perform medical photography, digital image processing
  • Maintain photo log and computer database
  • Maintain photo/digital imaging equipment

 

Receive and release decedents

  • Prepare bodies
  • Coordinate release with funeral home staff including any personal property released under chain of custody
  • Ensure proper documentation received and retained

 

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma and two years of college coursework in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, anthropology, forensic science, or a related field. One year experience in a lab setting or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, anthropology, forensic science, or a related field with significant coursework in human anatomy. Two years of experience in a lab setting.
