The General Clinic Nurse supports the Sedgwick County Health Department (SCHD) by providing direct patient care and education to clients of the Family Planning, Sexually Transmitted Infection, Early Detection Works and Refugee Health Programs. This position supports the SCHD mission by promoting wellness through health screenings and education, and providing testing and treatment as directed by advanced practice providers or following clinic protocols to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections. The employee may deploy to the field as a responder or in a leadership position during a public health emergency (Activation Level 3).
Patient Care and education
- Conduct patient assessments and clinical care, including contraceptive administration and STI testing
- Utilize critical thinking skills to triage patients for the advanced practice providers when appropriate
- Order screening and/or diagnostic tests based on advanced practice provider orders or clinic protocols
- Administer, dispense and document appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment plan per protocol or provider orders
- Provide comprehensive sexual health education to patients, including safe sex practices, contraception options, and STI prevention
- Ensure patient understands the need for follow-up care
- Ensure that procedure instruments are sterilized and autoclaved right after each use
Documentation and Compliance
- Maintain accurate patient records and documentation in the electronic health record
- Ensure strict adherence to infection control protocols
- Follow healthcare regulations and clinic policies and procedures, including confidentiality (HIPAA)
- Participate in monthly chart audit with timely correction of identified errors
- Respond timely to internal/external customer questions or inquires
- Schedule colposcopies for patient with abnormal pap smear, obtain results of colposcopy for provider to review and notify patient of required follow-up in per advanced practice provider orders
- Complete medication inventory and tracking
- Complete required program data collection forms (DAISEY, HIV) by the end of the business day
- Be responsible for maintaining accuracy of assigned databases
- Completes daily pharmacy log reviews, monthly supply audits, and assists pharmacist with quarterly pharmacy audits.
Collaboration and Community Outreach
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals and participate in team meetings
- Participate in community health education and outreach opportunities to raise awareness of services
- Complete program specific training as assigned by supervisor
- Assist in organizing activities for required program committees
- Stay updated with the latest developments through continuing education and to maintain active license
Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Possess and maintain a valid, unencumbered, and unrestricted State of Kansas Registered Nursing License (RN). Maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers/AED certification and required trainings to maintain licensure and/or certification. Must complete Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) IS 100, 200, and 700 courses within 30 days of employment.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelors of Science in Nursing from an accredited college or university. 1 year work experience in a public health department or medical related field.
