Horticulturist - ZOO

Work Schedule: 40 hours per week  


Performs daily duties associated with maintenance, care and development of indoor and outdoor plant displays, collections, and exhibits. Ensures duties are directly related to design, installation, and care of woody and herbaceous plant material, hardscapes, and water features, and equipment. Interacts and provides customer service to all zoo-defined customers.



  • Demonstrates and maintains knowledge in the operation of equipment and tools necessary for landscape processes.
  • Maintains walkways and paths by removing litter, debris, and snow.
  • Maintains and repairs irrigation systems.
  • Maintains various hardscapes, stone paths and walls, edging, and fencing.
  • Maintains ponds and water features.
  • Maintains plant protection measures including hot wire, hot grass, and other barriers.
  • Maintains knowledge of browse and toxic plant materials and be able to identify species that are toxic or approved as safe for animals.
  • Monitor zoo grounds for safety concerns and report them immediately.
  • Drive Zoological Society owned vehicle, as needed for transportation of horticulture products



  • Plant and/or transplant various herbaceous and woody plants.
  • Irrigation systems as needed.
  • Participate in the installation of turf areas.
  • Various hardscapes including stone paths and walls, edging, and fencing.
  • Ponds and water features.
  • Plant protection measures including hot wire, hot grass, and other barriers.
  • Reads and executes landscape projects from construction documents or landscape designs.
  • Design and install landscapes and containers as needed.


Plant Care

  • Performs a wide range of landscape/maintenance tasks important to cultivation, preservation, protection, and transplanting of existing and new plants; including but not limited to soil preparation, planting, mulching, and weeding, watering, fertilizing, irrigating, IPM and pesticide application as needed.
  • Participate in care of turf areas, woody plants, and herbaceous ornamental plants; including but not limited to mowing, edging, trimming, pruning, pinching, repotting, watering, fertilizing, and pest control.
  • Observes health of botanical collection and reports issues or concerns immediately.
  • Performs greenhouse management tasks as required.


Minimum Qualifications:  High School Diploma or equivalent. Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance.  Out-of-state driver’s license accepted upon hire with ability to obtain a valid State of Kansas Driver’s License within 30 days of employment. Ability to obtain Kansas Pesticide Applicator License


Preferred Qualifications: Degree from an accredited college or university in Horticulture, Botany, or related field. One year practical work experience in Horticulture related field. Kansas Pesticide Applicator License.
