Immunization Program Nurse II-HEALTH

Work Schedule: 8AM-5:30PM, M-W, 9:30AM-7PM Thurs 8AM-12:30PM/12:30 PM-5 PM Fri, occasional evenings/saturdays  

 

The Immunization Program Nurse II is a full-time position in the Sedgwick County Health Department (SCHD). The position reports to the Immunization Services Coordinator. This position performs immunization and health screening services at all clinic locations. The Immunization Program Nurse II utilizes critical thinking skills and problem solving techniques based on medical judgments. This position will maintain professional expertise and keep confidentiality in all areas of patient contact. Works under the direction of written medical protocols and standing orders.

 

Provide direct patient care and education to customers obtaining services

  • Administer intramuscular and subcutaneous immunizations, perform phlebotomy and capillary blood sampling for lab tests, screen for pediculosis (head lice), place TB skin tests and interpret the results
  • Provide appropriate and effective patient education, interaction, and customer service
  • Provide immunization and health screening services according to SCHD protocol and the CDC’s ACIP guidelines and recommendations
  • Document all services provided to clients and all medications/vaccinations administered
  • Use technology effectively to serve clients in a safe and efficient manner
  • Drive to off-site locations to provide services to clients

 

Support Immunization Program  Services and Goals

  • Immunization Program Nurses will collaborate as a team with the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program to increase immunization rates of WIC program participants by providing immunization clinics at WIC sites, tracking referrals, and performing outreach and follow-up
  • Provide education to WIC staff regarding immunization schedules and SCHD Immunization Program Services.
  • Complete assigned reporting and referral entry in an accurate and timely manner
  • Participate individually and/or as a team to provide services at activities such as health fairs, outreach events, and mobile immunization clinics, occasionally outside of business hours
  • Participate in QI project
  • Attend and participate in Immunization Team Meetings

 

Vaccine Inventory Management  

  • Understand how to manage vaccine during a mobile clinic by knowing how to prepare, pack, maintain and document temperature of vaccines
  • Minimize vaccine wastage by selecting vaccines from the correct funding source for each client
  • Minimize vaccine wastage by selecting and preparing the appropriate vaccine(s) for each client
  • Participate in inventory processes including periodic vaccine counting and usage reporting

 

Minimum Qualifications: Associate degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university and completion of an accredited program that provides verification of skills and competencies necessary to administer vaccines, and conduct health screenings. New graduates welcome. Work experience in a public health department or medical-related field. Holds a valid, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license with the Kansas State Board of Nursing. Possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers/AED certification and required trainings to maintain licensure and/or certification. Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid Kansas driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance. In order to comply with the requirements of the federal health care staff COVID-19 vaccination mandate, all employees of COMCARE and the Health Department must be fully vaccinated. All offers of employment are contingent upon submission of vaccination documentation prior to start date. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
