This position supports the Property and Evidence storage and maintenance for the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office. This position assists with receiving, cataloging, storage, transport, and disposal of physical evidence and other property coming into custody of the Sheriff. The employee in this position may be exposed to hostile and emotionally charged individuals. Additionally, the employee in this position is exposed to sensitive and disturbing information and physical pieces of evidence from violent crimes, accidents, theft, and other case-related content.
Process and Maintain Property and Evidence
- Receive physical evidence, found property, personal property, seized items and other property taken into Sheriff’s custody, including paperwork for each item
- Inspect evidence and paperwork for accuracy and completion, and enter information into evidence tracking software
- Contact employees as needed for corrections on evidence and paperwork before processing
- Sort evidence into appropriate sections using mobile racking systems, refrigerators, freezers, and restricted areas
- Instruct employees on proper methods of marking, packaging, and submitting evidence
- Maintain detailed records of property transactions
- Review laboratory examination requests for items needing tested at RFSC for completion and accuracy and pull evidence requested
- Research and assist individuals requesting property back, and communicate with the assigned detective to facilitate return of property
- Assist individuals coming to pick up personal property, and file paperwork to complete returns
- Maintain storage facilities in a neat, clean, and orderly condition
- Organize and condense evidence as needed
Transport Evidence
- Drive the Property van to other divisions to pick up new evidence and paperwork
- Load and unload evidence using the Property and Evidence van
- Drive samples to the Regional Forensic Science Center (RFSC) for testing, and pick them up as needed
- Assist with site pickups outside of normal shift hours
Sort and Assist with Evidence Removal/Disposal
- Research and prepare journal entries for removal/disposal of evidence and property
- Pull evidence as requested for destruction
- Attempt to reunite personal property with owners or other authorized parties
- Complete paperwork and communicate with other divisions at the Sheriff’s Office to reunite firearms with owners upon request
- Transport evidence to the destruction site, and assist with controlled destruction
Minimum Qualificans: High School Diploma or equivalent. One year of experience in administrative work, warehouse/inventory, law enforcement, or a related field. One year of experience with Microsoft Suite or similar systems. Must pass pre-employment test of 80% reading comprehension to be completed after interview. Per Sedgwick County Policy, this is a driving level position that requires a US Kansas driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance. No record of criminal conviction, diversion, or expungement of any felony or crime of dishonesty. Successful completion of the applicant process and Civil Service certification. Have no history or subsequent conduct that renders the employee unusable as a witness.
Preferred Qualifications: Two years of experience in a law enforcement setting.
