Safety & Training Officer

Work Schedule: 8am to 5pm; Monday to Friday 

 

This position is responsible for researching, developing, and implementing a County-wide Safety Program to minimize potential safety risks. Works closely with all departments to ensure the County’s Safety Program is incorporated consistently in all existing and all new work processes.

 

Manage the County’s Safety Program and Safety Culture

  • Administers the County’s Safety Programs, including but not limited to the Bloodborne Pathogens program and the Respiratory Protection Program.
  • Develops a strong culture of safety through departmental collaborations to develop and evaluate safety procedures and polices across the County.
  • Administers the development and presentation of safety trainings through in-person and online formats; manages the online safety training for departments.
  • Coordinate the development and annual review of Departmental emergency and Contingency of Operation Plans, in partnership with Courthouse Police, the Sheriff’s Office, Facilities, and the Manager’s Office.

 

Evaluate effectiveness of Safety Training

  • Establish and maintain metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of the County’s safety program.
  • Conduct accident/injury investigations, safety inspections, and field audits to ensure compliance with the County’s Safety Program and state regulations.
  • Coordinates the Accident Review Board to include establishing the agenda, compiling materials, summarizing board findings, and routing summaries to the Risk Manager and Deputy County Manager for review.
  • Serve as advisor to departmental Safety Committees to promote education, awareness, and generate employee responsiveness towards safety policies and procedures.

 

Administrative Duties

  • Partners with departmental leadership and staff to identify and anticipate hazards and exposures through risk assessments.
  • Acts as the administrative liaison for occupational safety and environmental regulatory agency contacts.
  • Assist the Risk Manager with the development and review of Risk Management policies.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Associate’s Degree (Occupational Health and Safety Management, Risk Management, Public Administration, Engineering, or closely related field) and three years of experience in loss prevention, risk management, safety, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge skills and abilities

Bachelor’s Degree by date of hire(Occupational Health and Safety Management, Risk Management, Public Administration, Engineering, or closely related field) and one year of experience in loss prevention, risk management, safety, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge skills and abilities. Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid Kansas driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety Management, Risk Management, Public Administration, Engineering, or closely related field. Five years of experience in loss prevention, risk management, safety, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge skills and abilities.
