Senior Corrections Officer - ADULT 1ST - CORRECTIONS

Performs lead worker duties and routine work involving the observation and security of adult residents in a 24-hour correctional facility within the Department of Corrections.   

Direct Care

• Assist with client admissions and releases, as needed.
• Supervise adult clients’ care and security; lead recreation, instructional, or educational activities; and search client property and facility areas.
• Maintain safety and security through alert observation and prompt intervention.
• Monitor client activities inside or approved outside the facility, emphasizing security, behavior modification, control, and prosocial modeling.
• Administer urinalysis and breathalyzer tests; review reports and communications to stay informed of facility and client activity.
• Model positive, prosocial behavior.

Case Management

• Escort clients to school, court, visitation, meals, and other activities; communicate with community contacts to monitor client activities.
• Address rule violations by initiating discipline, preparing reports, assigning and supervising consequences, investigating incidents, and recognizing positive behavior with incentives.
• Prepare and maintain records and reports; manage client money and property as needed.
• Ensure medication record, handling, and distribution requirements are met, as needed.

Supervisor Extender

• Provide situational counseling to help clients understand and meet program requirements.
• Provide crisis intervention and suicide prevention.
• Apply approved emergency intervention or restraint when appropriate.
• Administer first aid and CPR as needed.
• Assume relief shift-supervisory duties when supervisors are absent.
• Assist supervisors with routine duties to ensure policy and procedure compliance.
• Support the supervisory team by assisting with staff supervision and evaluations, training new staff, and modeling expected team behavior.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent.  Certified diploma or transcript verifying equivalent credits is required. Nine (9) months experience working with justice-involved youth or adult offender population in a program or facility environment. Professional references are required to verify the related work experience. Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age. Must possess first aid, CPR, and physical restraint certification or acquire them within initial period of employment. Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance. (Mileage reimbursement is provided by County if use of personal passenger vehicle.) Pass legal background check, Child and Adult Abuse & Neglect Central Registry checks, KCJIS Security Policy (fingerprint) check, and pre-employment screens.  Must also meet the required conditions contained in KSA 65-516 and KAR 28-4-356.  

Preferred Qualifications: One (1) year of experience working with justice-involved youth or adult offender population in a correctional facility setting. Six (6) months supervisory experience. Professional references are required to verify the related work experience. Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice, or closely related field. Transcript verifying education credits is required.
