Testing Team Leader COVID-19

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with some evening and weekend hours possible 


This is a temporary position at the Sedgwick County Health Department that supports COVID-19 response. The Testing Team Leader will be assigned primarily to the Testing Branch. If needed, the position would provide support to the Vaccine Branch. Within each branch, the Team Leader could perform duties at a specific location each day or be assigned to a mobile location in Sedgwick County. The Team Leader supervises a team of samplers or vaccinators and also registration associates, ensuring procedures are followed, timely and accurate documentation and data entry is performed, and good customer service is delivered. The Team Leader coordinates team schedules and supplies for each day’s activities. As a Medical Specialist, the Team Leader follows protocols and collects respiratory samples from patients for COVID-19 testing and provides vaccine to patients. The Team Leader ensures the collection and packaging of samples from Health Department sampling locations, including mobile locations, and specimen delivery and pick-up. The Team Leader responds to questions from clients, ensures patient confidentiality, follows HIPAA policies, maintains professional expertise, and works under the direction of a licensed nurse or doctor following written protocols.


Supervise team that collects patient samples for COVID-19 testing or administers COVID-19 vaccine

  • Maintain inventory. Ensure staff have needed supplies and equipment onsite.
  • Coordinate team schedules
  • Ensure staff follow protocols and procedures
  • Perform audits of team members to ensure accurate and timely registration, data entry, and customer service
  • Communicate with supervisor through daily report and more frequently if necessary


Work with host sites and coordinate specimen packaging and shipping

  • Work with host sites to schedule sampling, as needed
  • Ensure facility documentation and reporting is completed prior to and after sampling or vaccination is performed
  • Ensure all results are communicated to facility in a timely manner
  • Coordinate specimen packaging and shipping
  • Deliver and pick up specimens and specimen kits as needed


Support COVID-response activities

  • Collect respiratory samples using appropriate technique
  • Assist clients with collecting saliva specimens
  • Collect other samples as needed
  • Administer vaccine to patients
  • Complete documentation accurately and timely
  • Perform data entry of patient information into client management and laboratory requisition systems


Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma or GED and certification as a Medical Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse, Paramedic, Laboratory Technician or other professional licensure or training from an accredited program which provides verification of skills and competencies necessary to complete the essential job functions of the position. OR Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university and completion of an accredited program that provides verification of skills and competencies necessary to complete the essential job functions of the position. Certification or licensure or documentation of training in the particular field listed under educational requirements. OR Associate’s degree and completion of an accredited program.


Preferred Qualifications: Minimum requirements plus bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. One year of work experience in a medical field performing patient assessments and sample collection. Work experience in a public health department. Work experience supervising staff, including coordinating schedules and performing performance audits. Bilingual in English and Spanish or Vietnamese.
