Performs civil engineering duties associated with the planning, location, design, construction, and maintenance of roads, structures and related facilities. Responsible for providing civil engineering expertise, guidance and technical assistance to Sedgwick County, consultants and the public.

 

Transportation engineering design from site feasibility analysis and planning to final design services, including administrative work in the field or office associated with the design, development, investigation, construction and maintenance of roads, structures and related facilities.

  • Prepares engineering plans, detailed working drawings, cost estimates, and project specifications for various projects.
  • Guides the work of survey, CAD and inspection personnel.
  • Coordinates utility relocation; identifies and works to resolve conflicts.
  • Recommends methods of resolving unusual and complex problems and improving materials and practices; interprets applicable engineering and administrative directives, policies and standards.
  • Reviews technical reports, engineering drawings and construction plans for compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, KDOT and Sedgwick County design specifications.
  • Meets with interdepartmental staff, outside engineers, officials and citizens to solve engineering and administrative issues.
  • Employs Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, specialized modeling software and CAD design software in preparation of data compilation, engineering design and analysis.

 

Manages the work of outside consultants; reviews construction plans and coordinates efforts to achieve project goals.

  • Ensures compliance with the Wichita-Sedgwick County Subdivision Regulations; approves subdivision street construction plans.
  • Acts as Project Manager; monitors consultant schedules, deliverables, and budgets; prepares projects for construction letting.
  • Coordinates and communicates consultant work with peers and supervisors to ensure beneficial incorporation into the Public Works project schedule.

 

Administers utility and entrance culvert permits.

  • Administers and issues utility and entrance culvert permits; coordinates with county and township personnel.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from an ABET-accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or closely a related field of study. One college semester of CAD software training or one year of consistent and progressive work experience with CAD software. Satisfactory passage of an examination in the fundamentals of engineering given by the National Council of examiner, or Engineering and Surveying or ability to pass the examination within 6 months of employment. Valid Kansas driver’s license.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Four years of civil engineering experience or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Two years of AutoCAD experience. Registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Kansas.
