Performs technical work related to construction and maintenance of facilities. Participates in a variety of operations including construction, maintenance and repair, design, and implementation as requested by customer. Participates in special event preparation, setup, and teardown. Interacts and provides customer service to all Zoo defined customers.  This position participates in a mandatory winter snow removal on-call rotation.

 

Project Work

  • Conduct needs analyses for projects including interviews with staff, research, and observation.
  • Demonstrate and maintain skills to identify and correct defects in buildings, enclosures, fixtures, equipment and tools necessary for processes.
  • Follow or design project plans to execute projects; regularly update plans as requirements change throughout the project.
  • Ensure design plans are constructed with safety and well-being in mind for animals as well as caretakers and customers.
  • Use plans and best practices to select the appropriate materials and methods to complete projects.
  • Use organizational knowledge and available materials to ensure the final product looks well-kept and visually appealing.
  • Weld and fabricate various structures.
  • Test projects before, during, and after implementation to ensure design success.
  • Layout, plan, excavate, and prepare for concrete, rock, or asphalt on project sites.
  • Assist with executing installation of concrete, rock, and asphalt.
  • Customize lock systems as requested.
  • Assist staff in evaluations and updates to animal enclosures, including changes due to animal health, mobility, and age. Help outfit enclosures to prepare for new animal additions.

 

Maintenance

  • Evaluate and complete work orders as assigned.
  • Maintain knowledge of occupational hazards of building trades to facilitate strong workplace safety.
  • Perform carpentry work in construction and repair all aspects of exhibits; including but not limited to fences, doors, buildings, and other structures as requested by staff.
  • Drive Zoological Society owned vehicle, as needed for transportation of maintenance products.
  • Troubleshoot, evaluate, and repair a variety of systems, equipment, and building needs including electric, plumbing, HVAC, and hydraulic systems. 
  • Perform preventative maintenance; troubleshoot and repair all vehicles and equipment.
  • Safely operate all zoo required equipment for completion of job duties.

 

Event Setup and Interdepartmental Support

  • Collaborate with outside organizations to set up and maintain seasonal attractions.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to events.
  • Design, construct, and install various props/sets for special events.
  • Work special events rotation to maintain adequate staffing during events.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation during events, inclement weather, and high volume periods as assigned.
  • Assist with snow and ice removal.

 

Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent.  Two years of professional experience in facility maintenance or construction, or any of the following categories: electrical, plumbing, carpentry, or HVAC.  Demonstrated experience in the use of a wide variety of electrical and hand tools. Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Four years’ experience in maintenance or construction. Certifications from a technical college in construction related fields.
