Zoo Maintenance Worker

Work Schedule: 40 hours per week  


Performs technical work related to construction and maintenance of facilities. Participates in all maintenance operations including construction, maintenance and repair as requested by customer. Special event preparation, setup, and teardown. Interacts and provides customer service to all zoo defined customers.


Design, Inspect, Evaluate and Troubleshoot

  • Demonstrates and maintains skills to identify and correct defects in buildings, installations, fixtures, equipment and tools necessary for processes
  • Troubleshoot, evaluate and repair electric and hydraulic systems
  • Troubleshoot, evaluate and repair HVAC equipment for proper function of heating, ventilation, and air conditioners
  • Interprets and follows design concepts per customer requirements; uses provided plans or design or may create plans as requested; determines material requirements for each work order
  • Upon assignment of work orders, requests materials; submits completed work orders
  • Performs preventative maintenance, troubleshoots and repairs all vehicles and equipment


Construct, Maintain, and Repair

  • Maintains knowledge and methods for tools, materials and equipment of the construction trade
  • Maintains knowledge of occupational hazards of building trades
  • Welding and fabrication of various metals
  • Performs carpentry work in construction and repairs all aspects of exhibits; including but not limited to fences doors, buildings and other structures
  • Layout, plan, excavate and prepare for concrete, rock or asphalt on job sites
  • Executes installation of concrete, rock or asphalt in various uses
  • Drive Zoological Society owned vehicle, as needed for transportation of maintenance products


Event Setup and Interdepartmental Support

  • Performs setup of special events; including but not limited to providing for electrical, setup of lighting, signs, tents, props, and other structures
  • Design and construct various props/sets for special events
  • Assist departments when needed


Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent.  Experience in maintenance and/or construction or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance. Out-of-state driver’s license accepted upon hire with ability to obtain a valid State of Kansas Driver’s License within 30 days of employment.


Preferred Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent. Two years’ experience in maintenance or construction. Valid State of Kansas driver’s license, certifications from a technical college in construction related fields.
