Zookeeper, Commissary

Receives, organizes, and delivers needed uniforms and supplies. Prepares and delivers animal diets to all areas. Maintains uniform inventories and distributes uniforms to appropriate staff. Coordinates and purchases off-grounds supplies as needed. Interacts with and provides customer service to all zoo defined customers.

 

Primary Job Functions

Receipt and Delivery of Uniforms and Supplies

  • Demonstrates and maintains knowledge of commissary ordering procedures and practices
  • Assist current and new employees with new uniforms, uniform changes and updates
  • Effectively and timely communicates to supervisors on any product status updates
  • Purchases supplies, coordinates the pick-up and delivery of supplies from designated areas stores
  • Assists in the unloading of products from delivering vendors
  • Organizes all products stored in commissary coolers and freezers
  • Daily loads and unloads delivery vehicles
  • Dietary Preparation and Delivery
  • Demonstrates and maintains knowledge on preparing animal diets which may vary widely among taxa
  • Prepares special diets and bulk amounts in tubs for delivery to animal areas
  • Ensures the timely and correct preparation of products to all animal areas
  • Demonstrates and maintains knowledge of prevention from cross contamination
  • Ensures grain product is unloaded, rotated, and stacked properly
  • Area Maintenance
  • Cleans and maintains all areas within the commissary including the docks
  • Areas are to always be clean, organized and free of clutter
  • For behind the scenes tours, all areas must be presentable and aesthetically pleasing for zoo defined customers.
  • Daily inspects facilities for security and safety concerns
  • Conducts minor repairs to facilities or promptly submits concerns to supervisor
  • Communicates any pest control concerns to supervisors or veterinary team
  • Secondary Job Functions
  • Interacts regularly and provides customer service to the zoo defined customers – collections, conservation, contractors, co-workers, donors, students, professional colleagues, vendors, visitors & volunteers.
  • Maintains positive communication while utilizing the defined “GUEST” outline when providing educational activities, talking with zoo guests and answering questions.
  • Follows all safety protocols and area SOP’s while working with and around delicate, wild and potentially dangerous animals. Completes required training and safely operates all zoo required equipment for completion of job duties.
  • Assists in achieving the Zoo’s Mission, Vision and defined goals.
  • Assists in ensuring zoo guests have a safe and enjoyable visit through facility
  • Inspection. Participates in guest encounters in both formal and informal settings, and educational programming

 

Minimum Qualifications:  Two years coursework from an accredited college or university or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.   One to Three years of experience at an AZA Facility

 

Preferred Qualifications: Degree in Zoology or Biology from an accredited college or university.  Three to Five years of experience as a zookeeper in an AZA Facility
