Medical Specialist Testing COVID-19

Work Schedule: 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM, Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri 7:30 AM - 6:00 PM Wed. Some weekends required.

 

The Medical Specialist is a temporary position at the Sedgwick County Health Department (SCHD) that supports COVID-19 response.  The position is assigned to the SCHD COVID-19 Testing Branch. The Medical Specialist follows protocols and collects respiratory samples from patients for COVID-19 testing at the fixed sampling site and at mobile testing sites. As needed, the Medical Specialist will assist with registration, specimen delivery and pick-up, calling patients, and other duties. The Medical Specialist responds to questions from clients, ensures patient confidentiality, follows HIPAA policies, maintains professional expertise, and works under the direction of a licensed nurse or doctor following written protocols. Tasks will be performed under full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

 

Collect samples from patients for COVID-19 testing at Health Department and off-site locations

  • Verify patient information
  • Collect respiratory samples (nasopharyngeal swab or oral swab) using appropriate technique
  • Assist clients with collecting saliva specimens
  • Collect other samples as needed
  • Complete documentation accurately and timely

 

Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient information

  • Enter patient answers to medical questions accurately and timely
  • Ensure specimens match orders in the electronic health record system and on the tracking sheet
  • Administer vaccine to patients
  • Document issues when they arise and notify supervisor
  • Work with supervisor to improve processes

 

Support COVID-response activities

  • Package samples following appropriate procedures
  • Deliver and pick up specimens and specimen kits as needed
  • Perform data entry of patient information into client management and laboratory requisition systems
  • Assist with client registration
  • Assist with vaccine preparation and logistics as needed
  • Take calls from clients and businesses using good customer service and listening skills
  • Provide accurate COVID-19 disease, testing, and vaccine information

 

Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma or GED and certification as a Medical Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse, Paramedic, Laboratory Technician or other professional licensure or training from an accredited program which provides verification of skills and competencies necessary to complete the essential job functions of the position. OR Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university and completion of an accredited program that provides verification of skills and competencies necessary to complete the essential job functions of the position. Certification or licensure or documentation of training in the particular field listed under educational requirements. OR Associate’s degree and completion of an accredited program.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Minimum requirements plus bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. One year of work experience in a medical field performing patient assessments and sample collection. One year of community/public health experience or training. One year of experience with sample collection and shipping. Bilingual in English and Spanish or Vietnamese.
