Assistant Corrections Shift Supervisor- Adult Residential, 2nd Shift - CORRECTIONS

Performs relief supervisory and routine work involving the observation, security and training of adult clients in a 24-hour correctional facility within the Department of Corrections.  

 

Performance Management

  • Assists in the supervision of corrections staff on an assigned shift; assigns work to subordinates; trains in proper methods; may approve sick and vacation requests; tracks staff performance; assists in evaluation of staff.
  • Assists supervisor in scheduling of staff to ensure appropriate staff to client ratio is met; prepares and conducts staff training sessions.
  • Monitors staff and client activities within the facility or, as approved, outside the facility, with emphasis on security, behavior modification, control and modeling of prosocial attitudes, beliefs, values and behaviors.
  • Assists supervisor with facility operations and serves as relief shift supervisor when shift supervisor is absent.

 

Quality Assurance

  • Supervises and monitors the care and security of juvenile and adult clients in detention or residential facilities; leads recreation, instructional or educational activities; conducts searches of clients, property and areas in facilities.
  • Reviews reports and other communications to maintain awareness of activities within the facility and its clients.
  • May complete audits and quality assurance checks of subordinates’ work.
  • Ensures expectations for medication handling, distribution, and over the counter standing orders are met.
  • Must be able to set up, monitor and dispense medications; requires detailed medication management and documentation.

 

Shift Management

  • Reviews and completes Behavioral Reports or Disciplinary Incident Reports; investigates incident, determines consequences, counsels and documents results.
  • May conduct internal investigations as assigned.
  • May serve as an internal expert on facility policies and procedures.
  • Inspects the facility and grounds at shift change to ensure area is secure, doors are locked, areas are clean, reports any problems to shift supervisor.
  • May perform minor maintenance or housekeeping activities and make a report.
  • May complete inventory checklists or other similar work.
  • Answers phone, directs calls, takes messages, and provides referrals to the general public regarding questions about services.
  • Conducts fire and tornado drills as scheduled; assists in ensuring the safety of clients.

 

Minimum Qualifications: One year of experience working with juvenile or adult clients and six months supervisory experience.  Professional references are required to verify the related work experience. Facility staff shall be at least twenty-one years of age with a minimum of three years age difference between the staff member and the oldest client who can be admitted to the facility. Must possess first aid, CPR, and physical restraint certification or the ability to acquire within initial period of employment.  Valid Driver’s License and good driving record that meets the requirement of Sedgwick County Fleet Vehicle Operation and Usage Policy.  Personal vehicle for use when county vehicle is not available (employee reimbursement is provided by County).  Proof of liability insurance on personal vehicle. Pass legal background check, Child and Adult Abuse & Neglect Central Registry checks, KCJIS Security Policy (fingerprint) check, and pre-employment screen for alcohol and drugs.  Must also meet the required conditions contained in KSA 65-516 and KAR 28-4-356.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Two years of experience working with clients and families and one year supervisory experience. Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice, or closely related field. Transcript verifying education credits is required.
