Ensures and maintains compliance with applicable regulatory guidance governing building trades and construction. Performs inspections in the course of construction, alteration or repair and must assess all building applications in the field for code compliance and be able to communicate discrepancies to the customer and explain code requirements. Employee works alone in the field and demonstrates superb customer service.
Inspection of Residential & Commercial Structures
- Perform inspections in the course of construction, alteration, and repair for compliance with all applicable/adopted codes and safety standards and manage and maintain records utilizing electronic devices in the field.
Code enforcement and investigations:
- Investigates complaints, reported safety issues and potential code violations, assists management and legal staff in addressing violations, gather relevant documentation and possibly testify in court or in administrative hearings.
Education and Training:
- Maintain required certifications through continuing education.
Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent. Five years of experience in the construction industry OR Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Per Sedgwick County policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid Kansas driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance. Active certifications.
Preferred Qualifications: Associates Degree from Accredited College or Five years of training from an accredited Construction Trade School. Inspection experience is highly desirable. Six or more years of experience in the construction industry. Valid certification by ICC in multiple trade capacities. Valid certification by ICC as a residential, commercial or both residential and commercial building inspector.
MABCD hires at multiple levels. Please see the qualification levels below:
Building Inspector I: Become certified by ICC as a residential building inspector within 12 months of hire. Become certified by ICC as a commercial building inspector within 24 months of hire.
Building Inspector II: Valid class A, B or C General Contractor’s license or hold a valid Master or Journeyman certification in electrical, plumbing or mechanical. Five years of experience in the construction industry with a Contractor’s license or Other Trade Certificate (journeyman or master).
Become Certified by ICC as a building inspector within 12 months of hire for both residential and commercial.
Building Inspector III: Valid class A, B or C General Contractor’s license or hold a valid master or journeyman certification in electrical, plumbing or mechanical. Five years of experience in the construction industry with a Contractor’s license or Other Trade Certificate (journeyman or master).
Hold valid ICC Trade Certificates in at least two areas (Electrical, Mechanical or Plumbing). Become certified by ICC as a building inspector within 12 months of hire for both residential and commercial.
Building Inspector IV: Valid class A, B or C General Contractor’s license or hold a valid master or journeyman certification in electrical, plumbing or mechanical. Five years of experience in the construction industry with a Contractor’s license or Other Trade Certificate (journeyman or master).
Hold valid ICC Trade Certificates in all three areas (Electrical, Mechanical and Plumbing). Become certified by ICC as a building inspector within 12 months of hire for both residential and commercial.
