Performs routine work carrying out the intake and assessment procedures for clients brought to the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center (JIAC) within the Division of Corrections (DOC) and monitors clients while in the facility.
- Intake & Assessment - Interviews clients utilizing motivational interviewing skills. Completes intake portion of database when law enforcement presents clients for assessment; completes fingerprinting, mug shots, and as necessary, DNA. Enters accurate demographic information into the database. Creates and/or modifies records in database, demonstrates high quality writing and proofreading skills; ensures timely completion of records, and accurately files records.
- Case Management - Provides short-term crisis counseling to families to ensure the safe release of clients. Conducts family conferences to affect a safe and positive release with referrals to address issues identified during the assessment interview. Provides inter-agency collaboration by sending required information to the District Attorney and social agencies; sets bonds and court dates for municipal charges, sets detention hearing dates, pulls ad hoc information requests for agencies, creates/distributes daily reports.
- Supervisor Extender - Relieves the shift supervisor of routine tasks and reporting of shift activity, when needed. Assists in the training of team members and serves as a resource person for law enforcement to answer questions about JIAC processes.
Minimum Qualifications: Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age. Associates of Arts (AA) in criminal justice, psychology, sociology or a closely related field or course work equal to two years of college (60+ earned credit hours). Transcript verifying education credits is required. Professional references are required to verify the related work experience. Possess a valid Driver’s License and good driving record. Personal vehicle for use when county vehicle is not available (employee reimbursement is provided by County). Proof of liability insurance on personal vehicle. Must possess first aid, CPR and physical restraint certification or the ability to acquire within initial period of employment. Pass legal background check, Child and Adult Abuse & Neglect Central Registry checks, KCJIS Security Policy (fingerprint) check, and pre-employment screen for alcohol and drugs. Must also meet the required conditions contained in KSA 65-516 and KAR 28-4-356.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, psychology, sociology or related field. Two years’ experience working with youth and families. Professional references are required to verify the related work experience.
