Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am-5:00pm 

 

 

The TB Control Nurse prioritizes patient care, effective treatment, and prevention of TB. The position performs tuberculosis disease investigations and contact management to control the spread of disease and protect the public from health threats. The TB Nurse works under established protocols using professional judgment and follows local, state, and national protocols, guidance, and regulations. The TB Nurse provides TB content expertise for  in the community and consults with medical providers and other health partners about the diagnosis and treatment of patients and the prevention, detection, and reporting of TB. The TB Nurse works in clinic and also drives to locations in Sedgwick County when necessary. The position may deploy to the field as a responder or in a leadership position during public health emergencies.

 

Evaluate all people who may have active TB disease. Provide clinical assessment and treatment for people with active TB disease.

  • Assess clients who have positive TB screening tests to determine if they have active or latent TB by performing laboratory collection of sputum and blood via venipuncture, conduct skin tests, vision screening, obtain patient vitals and order chest x-rays as needed on new clients, contacts, and active cases.
  • Interview, educate, treat, and ensure treatment compliance for all people with active TB disease. Treat clients in clinic or off-site using Directly Observed Therapy.
  • Evaluate all active cases for necessity of contact investigations. Conduct contact investigations by interviewing and providing testing and treatment, if appropriate.
  • Coordinate care with TB Consulting Physician and medical providers of clients through written and verbal communication.

 

Provide clinical assessment and treatment for people with latent TB infection.

  • Interview, educate, treat, and ensure treatment compliance for people with latent TB infection. Provide treatment using Directly Observed Therapy or 30-day supply, as appropriate.
  • Ensure accurate documentation and case assessment by entering correct and appropriate investigation and clinical information into a case management system and electronic health record. Document client encounters.
  • Manage TB pharmaceuticals including medications inventory and labeling; dispensing and disposal documentation; quarterly pharmacy audits.

 

Educate and Collaborate in Controlling TB.

  • Assist coordination of TB Program with jail, hospitals, physicians, homeless shelters, and community agencies.
  • Provide verbal and written consultation to medical professionals and the public regarding diseases and conditions.
  • Communicate health messages and the work of Sedgwick County Health Department to medical professionals and the public by giving presentations and writing educational documents.
  • Attend trainings to maintain licensure and/or certification, including Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers/AED certification.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Associate’s degree in Nursing. Two years of experience in nursing practice. License, certifications, etc... Hold a valid, unencumbered registered nursing license with the Kansas State Board of Nursing. Per Sedgwick County Policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance. Must complete Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) IS 100, 200, and 700 courses within 30 days of employment.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Two years community/public health experience or training. One year of nursing case management experience. Two years of experience performing blood draws and specimen collections required for laboratory testing. One year Tuberculosis Control experience or training. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). One year experience with Windows-based computer environment.
